And one has to try weasel poo coffee while in Bali, right? We stop at a Luwak coffee plantation where we meet the civet cats that poo out the delicious coffee beans, and try a complete tea and coffee selection, which are all seriously delicious. We start feeling more tropical as the temperature and humidity increase as we meander Bali’s winding roads between rice paddies and into the forest. Hotel guests can do this too, or else they can head off to one of the other myriad dive sites with Zen Dive Bali (the nearby dive school Alila Maggnis partners with).Īfter my coral planting, we decide to head to the Liberty Wreck, which is fantastic and was stuffed with sealife, including two gorgeous turtles and even a shark – missed by me 10m down but spotted by my husband, snorkeling on the surface.įrom Mangiss we headed inland to Ubud, the arty heart of Bali, and quite a culture shift. To set off our honeymoon, and to launch our hotel Alila Manggis’ new corals project, I was invited to dive down to a newly-built artificial reef to plant some teeny-tiny coral babies with the aim that they will grow into a full blown protective reef over the decades. It’s a great place to sit and watch the sea, coconut in hand, and we do actually manage to swim in front of our hotel as the weather is calm and the current is fun rather than surfy during our stay.īut really, it’s all about the diving (and snorkeling) on this side of the island. From cliff edges to black sands, to rough surf seas, Bali’s coastline is fantastic and Manggis itself stretches along the seafront. There are a few beaches dotted around but when it comes to white sands, it really doesn’t bother trying to compete with nearby Thailand and Malaysia.īut it does do seaside. (We didn’t make it across but that was an error and you should go – get the ferry from nearby Padang Bai.)Ĭontrary to all our presumptions, Bali isn’t really a beachy place. It’s a key area for diving and a great jumping off point for the Gili Islands. ![]() We headed straight to Manggis, on the southeast coast. We were there slightly off-season – which makes it much more pleasant – but heading away from party-zone Kuta, Seminyak and bypassing the capital of Depensar as quickly as possible will help you really get into the swing of real, laid back Bali. The most famous areas of Bali are predictably the most congested with tourists. It’s perfect for couples that don’t want to waste all their precious holiday days languishing by a pool (though you can also spend many delicious hours doing just that too).īy the time we headed home from our honeymoon in April we felt like we’d been on at least four mini-holidays, touring the island in completely unique and contrasting areas. Replace “pixel url here” with the url of the pixel(s) you want to use. It’s been rather overshadowed by the Maldives and Mauritius in recent years, but in my mind Bali is still the home of the honeymoon.īecause while its white-sanded rivals offer long stretches of sandy beach, there’s little to actually…do.īut Bali’s uniqueness lies in its contrasts – you can climb a mountain one day and dive a wreck the next.
